Hales Bar on Crescent Road is one of the oldest pubs in Harrogate and one of the best-preserved Victorian gin palaces in the north of England. The interior — etched glass, dark wood, ornate mirrors, old photographs of the town — dates from the 1880s and has changed little since. It was originally attached to a bottling company that supplied mineral water and ginger beer to the spa visitors.
The bar serves a wide range of real ales, and the gin list is extensive, as you would expect from its heritage. It fills up on Friday and Saturday evenings but is generally comfortable midweek. If you are interested in Victorian pub interiors, this is the best in Harrogate by some distance.
