Heptonstall

Hilltop stone village above Hebden Bridge, with church ruins, cobbles, and huge Calder Valley views.

Heptonstall is the best short climb from Hebden Bridge: a steep walk up from the valley into a stone hilltop village of cobbles, old houses, church ruins, and views back across Calderdale. It feels older and more austere than the town below.

The ruined old church and the newer church beside it give the village its centre. Add time for the lanes, the graveyard, and the descent back to Hebden Bridge, which is much easier on the lungs than the climb up.

A story
Heptonstall's churchyard holds the grave of poet Sylvia Plath, who is buried here under the name Sylvia Plath Hughes. The village also has older ghosts: Civil War fighting, ruined church walls, and packhorse routes over the Pennines.
