A small, well-curated local history museum tucked down a side alley off the market square. The collection covers the social history of Swaledale and Wensleydale — lead mining, cheese-making, the rise and fall of the textile industry — through reconstructed shopfronts, period interiors and a pleasingly eclectic gallery of farming and domestic objects.
The popular pull is upstairs: the original veterinary surgery set built for the BBC television adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, preserved here after filming ended in 1990. Open March to October.
