St Mary's, set back from the centre on the east side of the town, is Richmond's working parish church. It was substantially rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1859 but incorporates much earlier fabric, including a Norman doorway and a fine 14th-century tower.
The unexpected treasure is the choir: twelve carved oak bench ends rescued from Easby Abbey at the Dissolution and reinstalled here. They show grotesques, foliage and the misericords' usual procession of monks, beasts and morality scenes. Open daily until late afternoon.
