The Shambles

Medieval butchers' street with overhanging timber frames, York's most famous

The most famous street in York and one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe. The timber-framed buildings lean towards each other so closely that the upper floors almost touch. It was the city's butchers' quarter until the 19th century — the wide windowsills and hooks outside many shops were for displaying meat. Now mostly tourist shops, but the street itself is worth seeing.
