York has a better restaurant scene than its size would suggest, largely because the volume of tourists sustains places that a purely local trade could not. The best cooking in the city draws on Yorkshire produce — game from the moors, fish from the northeast coast, meat and dairy from the Dales and the Vale — and the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome has a city-centre branch on Museum Street. Micklegate and Goodramgate both have concentrations of independent restaurants worth investigating. Book ahead for the better places, particularly at weekends.
