York's central shopping district runs from the Shambles through Stonegate to St Helen's Square and Parliament Street. The Shambles and the Snickelways — the network of medieval alleys behind it — are largely tourist shops now, but the street itself is worth walking. Stonegate, the cobbled street running from St Helen's Square to the Minster, has a mix of independent shops and chain stores; the better independent shops are mostly in the streets immediately off the main drag. Newgate Market, off Parliament Street, operates most days and sells produce, crafts, and general goods. The Shambles Market has stalls including street food and local produce alongside the tourist-facing shops.
