The Star Inn the City

Andrew Pern's city-centre restaurant on Museum Street, serving Yorkshire-focused food in a riverside setting

The Star Inn the City is the York outpost of Andrew Pern's celebrated Star Inn at Harome, a Michelin-starred pub restaurant in the North York Moors that has been one of the best restaurants in the county for many years. The city-centre version, on Museum Street beside the River Ouse, is more accessible than the original and serves a similar menu of Yorkshire-focused modern British cooking: game from the moors, fish from the northeast coast, meat from local farms, vegetables from the Vale of York. The Sunday roast is particularly good.

The setting is attractive — a conservatory-style room with views of the river and the Museum Gardens wall — and the service is more relaxed than the prices might suggest. It is popular enough that booking ahead is advisable, particularly for weekend lunches. The wine list is well chosen and the selection of Yorkshire ales and spirits reflects the menu's regional emphasis.
