Day Trips

Brodick Castle — ten miles north of Whiting Bay, Brodick Castle is an imposing pile managed by the National Trust for Scotland, with substantial gardens that are among the best in the west of Scotland for rhododendrons in late spring. The mountain backdrop and coastal setting make it worth a visit even if the interior doesn't appeal.

Goat Fell — Arran's highest point at 874 metres, a full-day walk accessed from Brodick. The ascent is straightforward on a clear day and the views from the summit — over the Firth of Clyde, the Kintyre peninsula, and on a good day as far as Ireland — are exceptional. Allow five to six hours.

Lochranza — the village at Arran's north tip, with a ruined castle standing in the bay and the Isle of Arran Distillery nearby. The distillery offers tours and tastings. The Claonaig ferry departs from here in summer if you want to extend the trip into Kintyre.

Lamlash — three miles north of Whiting Bay, Lamlash sits in a sheltered bay with Holy Island closing the view seaward. The island is a Buddhist retreat and nature reserve; day trips are possible by boat from the pier. Kayaking in the bay is a popular option in season.
