Castle Douglas is a small Galloway market town with more pull than its size suggests. It sits beside Carlingwark Loch, close to the River Dee, and works best if you like gardens, ruined castles, birdlife, and independent food shops rather than big-ticket city sightseeing.
The real reason to stop is Threave Garden and Nature Reserve, a National Trust for Scotland estate with formal gardens, wetland, woodland, and hides where ospreys and other birds are part of the draw. Nearby Threave Castle stands on an island in the Dee, and even when access to the tower is limited, the walk out through the river meadows gives the place its proper drama.
Castle Douglas is not a place to rush through on the way to the coast. Come for a slow day: walk the loch, watch red kites over the fields, browse King Street, then head out to Threave as the light drops over the Dee.
