Wishart Arch

The Cowgate Port, almost always called the Wishart Arch, is the only surviving city gate of medieval Dundee. It is a sober Gothic arch in dressed stone, much restored over the centuries, and stands at the foot of Hilltown where the Cowgate originally left the town.

Tradition holds that the Protestant reformer George Wishart preached from the top of the arch during the plague of 1544, comforting the dying from outside the gate. Wishart was burned at the stake two years later in St Andrews — his apprentice John Knox carried the cause forward. The arch was scheduled for demolition in the nineteenth century but saved by local petition. A small detour from the city centre.
