The fortress on the rock at the top of the Royal Mile is the symbol of the city and the most visited paid attraction in Scotland. Allow at least half a day for the gatehouses, ramparts, the tiny 12th-century St Margaret's Chapel (the oldest building in Edinburgh), the Honours of Scotland (the crown jewels), and the Stone of Destiny. The audio guide is excellent and worth the few extra pounds. Time your visit to hear the One O'Clock Gun, fired every day except Sunday since 1861.
