Princes Street is the main high-street drag, with the usual department stores anchored by the historic Jenners building (now Johnnie Walker's flagship experience). For better shopping, walk one block north to George Street for designer and mid-range fashion, or the Multrees Walk development for the high-end labels. Independent shops cluster on Victoria Street and the surrounding Grassmarket — booksellers, vintage clothes, whisky merchants, the kind of places that gave JK Rowling her Diagon Alley imagery. Stockbridge is the spot for delis, antiques and small boutiques, with a busy farmers' market on Sunday mornings. For tartan, kilts and shortbread, the Royal Mile will sort you out.
