Grassmarket & Cowgate

Former execution ground turned lively square flanked by pubs and the castle rock

One of the most atmospheric corners of the Old Town. The Grassmarket is a wide cobbled square below the castle rock — once a weekly market, later an execution ground where the gallows stood near the White Hart Inn. The surrounding closes hide some of Edinburgh's oldest closes and vaults; on dark evenings the castle looming above makes the drama vivid.

The Cowgate, Edinburgh's deepest and oldest street, runs east from here beneath the South Bridge arches. Long neglected, it has become the city's late-night spine — packed with students, underground clubs, and the occasional medieval vault repurposed as a cocktail bar. Victoria Street curves away to the northeast in a graceful Victorian arc, lined with colourful independent shops stacked two stories above the street.
