Grassmarket

Historic cobbled square with pubs beneath Edinburgh Castle

A broad cobbled square in the shadow of the castle that was, for centuries, both Edinburgh's livestock market and its main place of public execution. Today it is one of the city's best evening hangouts — a long row of pubs and restaurants under the rock, with the late sun catching the castle wall above. Walk up Victoria Street from here for one of the most photographed views in the city.
