The name is a reference to the public gallows that stood in Grassmarket until 1784 — the last drop being the condemned's final fall. The pub leans into its gallows history without being ghoulish about it, and the interior has a proper Old Town feel: dark wood, stone walls, the kind of place where you can imagine the Edinburgh of earlier centuries. It gets busy with tourists in summer, but remains a decent pint in a historically charged location.
