Holyrood Park

Extinct volcano rising from the middle of Edinburgh

Address Queen's Drive, Edinburgh

A 650-acre wedge of crags, hills, lochs and grassland in the middle of the city, dominated by the extinct volcano Arthur's Seat. The walk to the summit takes about an hour from the Holyrood end and rewards you with one of the great urban views in Europe — the Old Town piled up on the west, the Firth of Forth and Fife to the north. The Salisbury Crags loop is a gentler alternative. Bring decent shoes and a windproof; the weather changes fast up there.
