Morningside Library

Carnegie library in a handsome Victorian building, one of the best-preserved public library buildings in Edinburgh

Address 184 Morningside Road, Edinburgh EH10 4PX

Morningside Library occupies a handsome 1904 Carnegie-funded building on the main road — one of 13 Edinburgh libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie, this one among the best-preserved. The interior has retained many original features: high ceilings, gallery balconies, ornate plasterwork. As a working library it serves the neighbourhood, but the building itself is worth a look as an example of the civic architecture that Carnegie's philanthropy produced. Free to enter; particularly interesting as context for understanding Morningside's history as an ambitious Victorian residential suburb.
