A 200-foot Victorian Gothic rocket pointed at the sky in honour of Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832. The blackened sandstone is dramatic against the green of Princes Street Gardens. There are 287 narrow steps to the top, getting tighter as you go — not for the claustrophobic, but the views over the New Town and up to the castle are excellent.
