The Royal Yacht Britannia served the British royal family from 1953 to 1997, sailing over a million nautical miles on 968 official voyages. Since decommissioning it has been moored in Leith as a museum ship, and it is one of the best things to visit in Edinburgh. The tour takes in the state rooms used by the Queen and senior royals — surprisingly modest in scale, decorated with a particular kind of English upper-class restraint — the crew quarters, the royal barge, and the engine room. The audio guide is excellent and includes recordings from crew members who served on board. Allow two to three hours.
