Girvan

South Ayrshire harbour town with a long beach, hill walks, and boats to Ailsa Craig.

Girvan is a seaside town on the South Ayrshire coast, far enough from Glasgow that it has kept more of its fishing-town character than the easier Clyde resorts. The harbour, beach, and view west to the lonely pyramid of Ailsa Craig are the reason to come.

The town itself is simple: a sandy beach, a working harbour, a clock tower called Auld Stumpy, and low hills rising behind the streets. It is not polished, but that helps. On a clear day, the combination of sea air, harbour boats, and Ailsa Craig offshore gives Girvan a strong sense of place.

If you have time, take a boat trip around Ailsa Craig or walk south along the coast. The island is a bird reserve and the source of the blue hone granite used for curling stones; even if you only see it from shore, it dominates the whole visit.

Beaches

Girvan's beach is broad, sandy, and close to the town centre. It is a proper west-coast strand rather than a resort-showpiece beach, with open views across the Firth of Clyde and enough space for a long walk even when the weather is only half cooperating.
