North Berwick itself is a day trip from Edinburgh, but the surrounding East Lothian coast deserves more exploration. Tantallon Castle and the Bass Rock are the essential local excursions. The walled garden village of Dirleton, four kilometres west, has an elegant 12th-century castle and one of the best village greens in Scotland. Gullane is a few minutes further west, with the famous Muirfield golf course and the long sandy beach. Dunbar, 25 km east along the coast, is the birthplace of John Muir and has a busy fishing harbour. For walkers, the John Muir Way long-distance footpath runs through North Berwick toward Edinburgh in one direction and Dunbar in the other.
