Things to Do

The town is small but the list of things to do is unusually rich for a place this size. The Scottish Seabird Centre on the harbour is the gateway to the Bass Rock and Craigleith island, which together hold the largest northern gannet colony in the world. The conical hill of North Berwick Law dominates the skyline and is an easy climb for a panoramic view across the Firth of Forth. Tantallon Castle, four kilometres east, is one of the most dramatically sited castle ruins in Scotland, and the broad sandy beaches west of the harbour are among the finest on the east coast. Golfers know North Berwick West Links as one of the great links courses; literary visitors should know that Robert Louis Stevenson summered here as a boy and used Fidra Island as his model for Treasure Island.
