Fidra Island

A small uninhabited island a few kilometres west of North Berwick, capped by a working lighthouse built by the Stevenson engineering family. Robert Louis Stevenson knew the island intimately and used it as the model for Treasure Island. Today Fidra is a Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve protecting nesting puffins, eiders, and shags.

You can see Fidra clearly from Yellowcraig beach; boat trips run from North Berwick harbour in summer.

A story
Robert Louis Stevenson summered as a boy with his family at North Berwick in the 1860s and 70s and used the small humped island of Fidra — visible from the family garden — as his physical model for Treasure Island. The shape on the map of Treasure Island in the novel matches Fidra closely.
