North Berwick Harbour

The small stone harbour is the picturesque centre of North Berwick — fishing boats, the seabird cruisers, the ruined St Andrews Auld Kirk on the headland above, and the Bass Rock visible offshore. The Seabird Centre sits directly above the eastern jetty; the open-air saltwater Milsey Bay swimming pool (now a tidal lido) is on the rocks just to the east.

In good weather, kayak rentals operate from the inner harbour. The harbour-side ice cream shop (S. Luca) has been making gelato in East Lothian since 1908.

A story
The harbour was originally built as a pilgrim ferry port to St Andrews across the Firth — pilgrims walking from the south on the way to St Andrew's shrine crossed here in small open boats from the 12th to the 16th century. The trade ended at the Reformation but the harbour kept its function as a fishing port and is now the base for the seabird boats.
