North Berwick West Links

A classic links course running directly along the shore west of town, the West Links is among the oldest and most respected courses in Scotland. Several of its holes — the Redan, the Perfection, the Pit — are textbook examples of links design and have been imitated on courses all over the world. The course is open to visitors with advance booking.

It is not as famous as the Old Course at St Andrews, but it is considered by many golf writers to be a finer, more idiosyncratic links — and the green fees are a fraction of St Andrews' rates.

A story
The Redan, the par-3 15th hole, is one of the most copied holes in golf — its blind diagonal green is the template for "Redan holes" on courses around the world. Tom Doak called it the most influential single golf hole ever designed. The club itself dates to 1832, making it the 13th-oldest in the world.
