Dunvegan

Skye lochside village anchored by Dunvegan Castle, seat of the MacLeod clan.

Dunvegan sits on a sea loch between the Vaternish and Duirnish peninsulas, about 20 miles from Portree. The main reason to come is Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the MacLeod clan and one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland.

Although it was partly rebuilt in the 19th century, the medieval outline is still evident. Inside, the castle museum holds a few remarkable relics of the MacLeod family, including the Fairy Flag — a fragment of ancient silk said to protect the clan in battle — and the Dunvegan Cup. The walled gardens are beautifully kept and worth time in their own right.

In summer, boat trips run from the castle jetty to visit the seal colonies on the small islands just offshore.
