Carbost

Small Skye village on Loch Harport, known for Talisker whisky beneath the Black Cuillin.

Carbost is a small village on the shore of Loch Harport in the Minginish peninsula, lying under the shadow of the Black Cuillin mountains. It has two things that bring visitors here: a fine beach and one of Scotland's most celebrated whisky distilleries.

Talisker Distillery is the only distillery on Skye and produces a robustly peaty single malt with a distinctive maritime character — often described as tasting of the sea and smoke. The distillery has been producing since 1830 and offers tours that end with a dram. It's worth visiting even if you're not a whisky enthusiast; the setting alone is extraordinary.

The beach at low tide reveals tidal pools and rock formations worth exploring. The village is tiny — a few houses, a pub, and the distillery — but the landscape surrounding it is among the most dramatic on Skye.

Things to Do

Carbost is a small village with a big distillery and a magnificent setting. Most visitors come for the Talisker tour, which is genuinely worth the time regardless of whether you drink whisky. The beach, the Black Cuillin mountains above the loch, and the single pub make for a very good slow afternoon.
