Coral Beach

Coral Beach lies at the end of a short walk from the road past Claigan, north of Dunvegan. The path crosses cropped pasture and ends at one of the most surprising stretches of shoreline in the Hebrides — a fine, almost white beach against turquoise water, framed by green hills.

The walk is straightforward and takes about half an hour each way. Wear boots in wet weather, the path can be muddy. There is no shelter at the beach, and the wind off the loch can be sharp even in summer.

A story
The beach is not coral at all. The white grains are fragments of maerl, a coralline red seaweed that grows on the seabed in cold water; storms break it up and wash it onto the shore. The effect is the same — a stretch of Caribbean-bright sand against the dark heather of Skye — but the biology is different and the beach is much colder than it looks.
