Dun Fiadhairt

A well-preserved Iron Age broch a few kilometres north of Dunvegan village, standing on a low promontory above the loch. The drystone walls still rise to a few metres in places and the circular plan is clear; the interior arrangements — guard cells, intramural staircase — can be made out with a little patience.

Brochs are unique to Atlantic Scotland and are not well understood — neither defensive forts nor ordinary dwellings, but something between. Dun Fiadhairt is reached by a short, often muddy path from a layby on the road north. It is open to the air and free to visit.
