Tobermory is the main village on the Isle of Mull, curved around a sheltered harbour on the island's northeast coast. Its painted waterfront is famous, but the place works because it is still a small port rather than a stage set.
The town is an easy base for a spare day on Mull. Start with the harbour and museum, take a distillery tour if whisky is your thing, and look for boat trips to the seal and seabird colonies around Calve Island. Aros Forest Park gives a quick dose of woodland and waterfalls just south of town.
Tobermory is small enough to explore on foot, though the lanes climb sharply away from the seafront. With a car, it also becomes a practical jumping-off point for Calgary Bay, Dervaig, and the wilder north of Mull.
