Summer Isles Boat Trips

The Summer Isles are a cluster of small, mostly uninhabited islands in the mouth of Loch Broom, visible from Ullapool harbour on clear days. Boat trips run from both Ullapool and nearby Achiltibuie during the summer months, offering seabird and marine wildlife watching — common seals, grey seals, porpoises, and dolphins are frequently seen, and minke whales and basking sharks appear in summer.

The largest island, Tanera Mòr, had a small permanent population until relatively recently and retains some stone buildings from the old fishing settlement. Some boat operators land passengers briefly on the island. On a sunny day, the combination of clear turquoise water, white shell-sand beaches, and mountain backdrops is genuinely extraordinary.

A story
Tanera Mòr, the largest of the Summer Isles, had a resident population well into the twentieth century. The marine biologist and writer Frank Fraser Darling moved there in 1938 with his family, living almost entirely off the land and sea for three years — an experience he documented in 'Island Years', one of the finest accounts of remote island life ever written.
