Ullapool is a whitewashed fishing village on the shore of Loch Broom, the main settlement on Scotland's northwest coast and an excellent base for exploring some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. It has more choice for eating, drinking and sleeping than any other town for many miles around.
Ferries to Stornoway in the Western Isles depart from the harbour, along with boat trips to the Summer Isles — a scattering of uninhabited islands in the mouth of the loch. The Ullapool Museum, in a converted Telford church, tells the story of the herring trade and the Highland Clearances. The Ceilidh Place — hotel, restaurant, bar, and bookshop — is the social centre of the village. There is not a road in the area that does not lead to some sort of scenic splendour: the coast road north to Lochinver, the loop through Achiltibuie, and the drive south to Corrieshalloch Gorge are all outstanding.
