Tudor Merchant's House

Late-15th-century merchant's house preserved by the National Trust

A small late-15th-century merchant's house on Quay Hill, now run by the National Trust and one of the few surviving examples of how Tenby's medieval merchant class actually lived. Three narrow floors are furnished as they would have been around 1500 — kitchen on the ground floor, hall above, sleeping quarters at the top.

Friendly staff are usually on hand to explain how the merchants ran their businesses from the ground floor and lived above. Allow about half an hour. Open from spring to autumn.

A story
Faint traces of original frescoes survive on the first-floor walls — religious scenes painted in the late 15th century, then whitewashed over for centuries. They were only rediscovered when the National Trust began restoration work in the 1930s.
