Oistins Fish Fry

Every Friday and Saturday evening the working fish market at Oistins transforms into one of the Caribbean's best-known street food gatherings. Stalls line the waterfront selling freshly caught mahi-mahi, snapper, and — the Bajan staple — flying fish, served with macaroni pie, rice, coleslaw, and fried plantain. You buy your fish from whichever stall appeals, take it to a communal bench, and eat while sound systems thump soca and reggae from every direction.

The fish fry is open to locals and visitors alike and has none of the manicured-for-tourists quality that affects similar events elsewhere. Prices are low by Barbados standards. Friday is the bigger night; Saturday is somewhat calmer. Arrive hungry between 7pm and 10pm. Bring cash — most stalls don't take cards.
