Newton Slave Burial Ground

Discovered in 1972 during construction work on the Newton Plantation estate, this burial ground contains the remains of more than 570 enslaved Africans who lived and died on the plantation between roughly 1660 and 1820. It is one of the largest and best-documented slave cemeteries ever excavated in the Caribbean, and the archaeological findings here have been central to understanding the lives — not just the deaths — of enslaved people in the Atlantic world.

The site is not a formal visitor attraction with opening hours but is accessible as a heritage site. It sits alongside the suburban sprawl of central Christ Church, which makes it all the more arresting to encounter.
