Abbotsford

Fraser Valley city with Sikh pioneer history, farm country, and Sumas Mountain trails.

Abbotsford sits in the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver, where the suburbs give way to berry farms, dairy fields, and the lower slopes of Sumas Mountain. It is not a polished city-break destination, but it has more substance than a highway stop: Sikh pioneer history, a preserved company village, and good local trails all sit within a short drive of each other.

The standout is the Gur Sikh Temple, built in 1911 and now a National Historic Site. Pair it with Clayburn Village, British Columbia's first company town, then spend the afternoon on the lake loop at Mill Lake Park or in the forest on Sumas Mountain. Abbotsford is best as a low-key day out from Vancouver or a useful stop on the way deeper into the Fraser Valley.
