Merritt

Nicola Valley highway town with country-music murals, ranch history, lakes, and dry-country trails.

Merritt sits in the dry Nicola Valley of British Columbia, where the Coquihalla and Okanagan routes meet between Hope, Kamloops, and Kelowna. Plenty of travellers know it only as a highway break, but the town has enough personality to reward a longer stop: ranch-country history, fishing lakes, mountain-bike trails, and a downtown identity built around country music.

The most visible local quirk is the Merritt Walk of Stars, a self-guided circuit of country-music handprints and murals. For history, start at Baillie House and the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives. Outside town, the dry hills and lake country make the place feel more Interior than Coast: open sky, sagebrush slopes, and backroads that quickly leave the highway mood behind.

Merritt is best with a car, a bike, or fishing gear. It is not a polished resort town, and that is part of the point. Give it a spare day if you want a practical base for the Nicola Valley rather than another quick fuel stop.
