Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre

The cultural centre of the Osoyoos Indian Band (a community of the Syilx/Okanagan Nation), built into the desert hillside above the north end of town. The exhibits cover the natural history of the Okanagan Desert and the long occupation of the Syilx people — their use of desert plants, their relationship with water, and the dramatic changes brought by European settlement. The outdoor area includes a reconstructed village and a short boardwalk trail through the actual desert ecosystem.

The centre is one of the most professionally run Indigenous cultural attractions in Canada. The interpretive staff know the material well, the building itself is designed sensitively into the landscape, and the adjacent Nk'Mip Cellars winery gives you somewhere worthwhile to go afterward. Spend two hours here before you visit any winery.

A story
Nk'Mip Cellars, adjacent to the cultural centre, was the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America when it opened in 2002. The Osoyoos Indian Band had been growing grapes and selling fruit to other wineries for years before deciding to produce their own wine — a move that helped put both the Nk'Mip name and Osoyoos's wine reputation on the map.
