Things to Do

Osoyoos sits at the intersection of desert ecology, Indigenous culture, and wine country — an unusual combination that gives the town more substance than its size suggests. The Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre is the single best introduction to the region's ecology and the Syilx/Okanagan people who have lived here for thousands of years. The lakeside provincial park at Haynes Point is the place to swim, camp, and watch the sunset. And the wineries on the benches above town produce some of the most interesting red wines in Canada.

The Okanagan Desert is the main ecological draw: a genuine semi-arid shrubland ecosystem with rattlesnakes, cacti, burrowing owls, and tiger salamanders, much of it protected by the Osoyoos Desert Society. This is the northern tip of the Great Basin Desert, and it feels dramatically different from the forests that dominate the rest of British Columbia.
