A saline lake about 9 kilometres north of Osoyoos on Highway 3 that in summer evaporates to reveal hundreds of circular pools, each a different colour — white, yellow, green, pale blue — depending on which mineral salts have concentrated in that particular depression. The colours shift through the season as evaporation continues. The effect is genuinely strange: from the highway it looks like a polka-dotted painting dropped into the hills.
The lake, known to the Syilx people as Kliluk, is rich in magnesium sulfate, calcium sulfate, and sodium sulfate. You cannot walk to the lake (it is on Osoyoos Indian Band land and is a sacred site), but you can see it clearly from the highway pullout across the road. A signed viewpoint gives context on the geology and the cultural significance.
