A 67-hectare nature reserve on the north end of town, managed by the Osoyoos Desert Society, protecting a fragment of the Okanagan Pocket Desert — Canada's only true desert ecosystem. A 1.5-kilometre boardwalk loops through the shrubland, passing antelope-brush, prickly pear cactus, and signage identifying the resident wildlife: burrowing owls, tiger salamanders, western rattlesnakes, Great Basin spadefoot toads, and half the bird species of British Columbia on migration.
Guided tours run in season and are worth taking — the naturalist guides know where to look for the reptiles that most visitors walk past without seeing. The reserve protects one of the most ecologically significant landscapes in Canada: less than 10 percent of the original desert habitat in BC survives, and this is among the best remaining examples.
