Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed

A drive of about an hour and a half north of Terrace via the Nisga'a Highway. The road climbs out of the Skeena drainage into the Nass Valley, then runs for forty kilometres across the lava field — a stark, black, lichen-covered landscape pushed out by the Tseax Cone in the last major eruption in Canada.

The provincial park is co-managed with the Nisga'a Nation. There's a small visitor centre with displays on the eruption and Nisga'a oral history, a short walk to the cone itself (the trail is open seasonally and only with a guide), and several Nisga'a villages along the road. Allow a full day from Terrace, more if you want to walk to the cone.

A story
Around 1700 CE the Tseax Cone erupted and sent lava down the Nass Valley, destroying two Nisga'a villages and killing around two thousand people. It is the most recent volcanic eruption in Canada and the only one remembered in Indigenous oral history.
