Audain Art Museum

The Audain Art Museum houses Michael Audain's private collection of British Columbia art, spanning from the work of the Haida and other Northwest Coast First Nations right through to 20th-century BC painters such as Emily Carr and E.J. Hughes, and on to contemporary artists. The collection is serious and well-curated — this is not a provincial vanity project but a genuine art museum that happens to be in a ski town.

The building opened in 2016 and was designed to complement rather than compete with the landscape. The permanent collection alone is worth the entry price; the rotating special exhibitions have brought international-quality shows to Whistler. Open year-round, the museum is a good option for days when the weather closes in or when you simply need a break from the mountain.

A story
The museum was designed by Patkau Architects and is set partly on stilts above a seasonal wetland on the edge of Whistler Village. The building itself is considered an architectural statement — a linear form clad in weathered steel that references the industrial and natural landscape of the Sea to Sky corridor.
