Train Wreck

The Train Wreck is one of Whistler's more unusual attractions — a collection of old Canadian National Railway boxcars that derailed decades ago and were abandoned in the forest near Cheakamus River. Getting there requires a short hike through second-growth forest across a suspension bridge, which adds to the sense of discovery.

The boxcars have been entirely covered in graffiti over the years, ranging from basic tagging to elaborate murals. The combination of rusting industrial wreckage and colourful art in a forest setting is genuinely striking. It's about a 45-minute round trip from the trailhead near Function Junction, the light industrial area south of the village. Not a world-class sight, but a nice detour that gets you away from the resort crowds.

A story
The boxcars derailed in the 1950s and were simply left where they fell, too remote and too awkward to retrieve. Over the decades they became a canvas for graffiti artists from across the Pacific Northwest, and the site now functions as an unofficial open-air gallery in the forest.
