Gros Morne National Park

UNESCO-listed Newfoundland park of fjords, tablelands, fishing villages, and mountain hikes.

North America > Canada > Newfoundland > Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne National Park is Newfoundland's great landscape pageant: fjord-like ponds, bald mountains, wind-bent tuckamore, beaches, fishing villages, and a slab of Earth's mantle pushed up where you can walk across it. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because the geology is exceptional, but you do not need to be a geologist to feel the force of the place.

The park is split by Bonne Bay, which makes planning important. The south side has Woody Point, the Discovery Centre, The Tablelands, Trout River, and Green Gardens. The north side has Rocky Harbour, Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, Western Brook Pond, and the long climb up Gros Morne Mountain.

Give the park several days. Distances are not huge, but the bay, weather, and trail times stretch everything out, and the best moments often come when fog lifts or the evening light catches the cliffs.
