Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the main town in central Labrador, set near Lake Melville where the Churchill River country meets the long roads and air routes of the north. It began in 1941 as a wartime air base and still carries that history plainly: runways, military buildings, and stories of Atlantic ferry flights sit beside Labrador's older Indigenous and settler routes.
This is a practical town, but not only a practical one. Labrador Military Museum explains why Goose Bay mattered in the Second World War and Cold War. Birch Island Boardwalk gives a quiet wetland walk close to the centre, and the Lawrence O'Brien Arts Centre is the town's cultural stage.
If you are crossing Labrador by road or flying into the region, give the town a day. It helps make sense of the Big Land: military logistics, northern weather, Labrador storytelling, and water everywhere.
