Goderich

Lake Huron town with an octagonal square, historic gaol, lighthouse, beaches, and big sunsets.

Goderich sits on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, where the Maitland River reaches the lake and the sunsets do most of the sales work. It is small, tidy, and a little proud of itself, with a courthouse square laid out like a wheel and a beach below town where freighters still come in for salt.

The town is more than a lakefront stop. The Huron Historic Gaol is one of Ontario's stranger small-town museums, the Huron County Museum is better than you might expect, and the Goderich Lighthouse gives you the classic Lake Huron view.

Come in warm weather if you want the boardwalk and beaches at their best. Even outside beach season, Goderich works as a half-day or full-day stop on the Lake Huron shore, especially if you like compact towns with a visible working harbour and a bit of 19th-century Ontario still showing.
