Appleby College

Appleby College is a prestigious independent school founded in 1911 on the Lake Ontario shore south of Oakville's downtown. The lakefront campus is striking — large Georgian-revival stone buildings set on grounds running down to the water, with mature trees and well-kept playing fields. It is privately operated and not generally open to the public, but the grounds along the lakeshore trail pass close to the campus perimeter.

The school runs international boarding programs and consistently ranks among Canada's top private secondary schools. The campus architecture and its waterfront position make it one of the more visually distinctive landmarks in the area, visible from the lakeshore trail east of Bronte.

A story
Appleby College has educated a disproportionate number of prominent Canadians, including members of prominent business families. The school was founded in 1911 on the site of a former apple orchard — hence the name — and the original farmhouse was incorporated into the early campus buildings, some of which still stand.
