Riverdale Farm

A free working farm in the middle of the city, on the old zoo grounds

Address 201 Winchester Street, Cabbagetown

A genuine working farm of three hectares in the heart of Cabbagetown, run by the city and free to enter every day of the year. It sits on the grounds of Toronto's original zoo, which operated here until the 1970s; the Victorian-style barns now house cows, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, and poultry, and staff carry out daily chores that visitors can watch.

It is aimed squarely at families and small children, but the wooded setting, ponds, and herb and vegetable gardens make it a pleasant stop for anyone wandering the neighbourhood. A weekly farmers' market runs on Tuesday afternoons in season. Combined with the adjacent Necropolis cemetery and the surrounding Victorian streets, it makes a natural anchor for an afternoon in Cabbagetown.
